ADOPT A STREET
This committee volunteers to clean up Devers St. between Morganton Rd. and Bragg Blvd. once every two months on Saturday morning. Breakfast at 8am if your hungry and pickup beginning at 9am. Meet in front of the Kiwanis recreation Center for the pickup. This activity takes less than an hour and is a good way to get a little fresh air and improve our community’s appearance at the same time.

CITIZENSHIP/ COMMUNITY SERVICE
This committee should implement projects in the arts, business affairs, citizenship, civic improvement, community beautification, conservation, health, international understanding, literacy, public affairs, safety, or help to our senior citizens. Popular projects at other clubs are Special Olympics, Meals on Wheels, issues forum and student exchanges.

This one person committee sends out the weekly e-mail announcement regarding the club meetings or other special events.

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE
Responsible for planning entertaining activities for the club. Such as sporting events, movies, dinners, picnics etc. Past events include dinners for eight, family day at the park, informal gatherings at various restaurants, trips to sporting events etc.

*GOLF TOURNAMENT
Responsible for planning and executing the annual golf tournament held each Fall. This is one of the two major fund raising events held by our club. This tournament is one of the best organized and attended in the county. All club embers are encouraged to participate in this fun and worthwhile event.

INTERCLUB MEETINGS
Responsible for going to all the other clubs in the district at least once a year. This is a great way to meet your fellow Kiwanians in the district. It s fascinating how unique each club has its own personality. Our club has a perfect record for the last 20 years under the chairmanship of John Poulos. All members will be invited to participate.

This committee is charged with helping to recruit new members for the club in accordance with the club standards set forth in the club bylaws. An orientation breakfast is held as needed once a month for new members where club expectations for them are reviewed.

MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
Responsible for writing and distributing to the membership, the monthly newsletter via e-mail or snail-mail as requested by members.

PANCAKE PROJECT
This is one of only two major fund raisers held each year in February. This event has been conducted for more than 25 consecutive years. Traditionally the event is held on a Friday and Saturday from breakfast till early afternoon. All members are encouraged to participate in this project.

PROGRAMS
Responsible for providing a speaker for all the weekly meetings. All members are encouraged to make suggestions for interesting programs. If you know someone who would be a good speaker please let one of the chairs know who they are. Speaker’s meal is covered by the club and each one is given a certificate of appreciation.

PUBLICITY/ HISTORIAN
This committee has two purposes, one to photograph various club activities for the club archives and two to promote and market the club in the newspaper, radio and other media available. The photos are maintained in the club scrapbooks.

SPIRITUAL AIMS
This committee should implement projects that support spiritual development, provide human companionship and comfort or guidance. Projects can encourage interfaith and interdenominational religious activity but should not promote one a specific religious sect. Some projects at other clubs include prayer breakfasts, transportation to religious services and visiting nursing homes.

SPONSORED YOUTH
This committee is responsible for establishing and supporting K-Kids Clubs in elementary schools, Builders Clubs in middle schools, Key Clubs in high schools and Circle K Clubs in universities and colleges. Our club currently sponsors Key Clubs at Douglas Byrd, Westover, Cape Fear and 71st High Schools. Each Key Club has an individual Kiwanis Advisor working with the Key Club at their assigned club for the school year. The Key Club Advisors try to attend as many meetings of the Key Club as possible and serve as liaison to the Kiwanis Club to help meet their needs. Each Key Club is encouraged to help at the annual Pancake Sale and to have their officers attend at least one Kiwanis Club meeting a year.

YOUNG CHILDREN PRIORITY ONE
This committee is responsible for implementing projects for children ages prenatal to 5 years old. Projects can include maternal and child health, childcare, early development, nutrition, parenting education and support, advocacy, pediatric trauma or safety. Popular projects at other clubs include literacy, assisting childcare and Head Start programs, distributing home safety checklists, building or repairing playgrounds. This committee also determines which projects are funded within this program area.

YOUTH SERVICES COMMITTEE
This committee implements projects that address school age youth. Projects can address academics, advocacy, career exploration, character development, citizenship, club activities, health, hobbies, leadership development, literacy, mentoring, drug prevention, sports and recreation. Popular projects include sponsoring sports teams, Terrific Kids, Bringing Up Grades, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminars, scholarships, mentoring and career days.
The clubs current Youth Services projects are as follows:
Bring Up Grades (B.U.G.)This committee goes to various elementary schools to participate in academic programs every 9 weeks. The clubs representative helps give out BRINGING UP GRADES (BUG) awards to kids who have brought up their grades in at least one subject and not dropped in other subjects. This project recognizes non-honor roll kids and is a lot of fun for the Kiwanis member giving out the awards such as stickers, pencils or certificates.

FREEDOM FOUNDATION YOUTH CONFERENCE
The club sponsors several students each year to a national conference in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. This committee determines which students will receive these scholarships.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Determines the application process for the in college scholarships the club awards each year. The club awards two Merritt Harrison scholarships at each based on academics and the Charles S. Taylor scholarship at based on need. Key Club members are given priority in the award of these scholarships.
